The Scottish Outdoor Tug Of War Championships got off to a fine start in Inverness on Sunday with bright sunshine and ten teams from as far apart as Carluke and Halkirk competing.
Events contested were the 500 Kg (6 man), 640 Kg (8 man), Catchweight, 400 Kg (6 woman) and 600Kg (4 & 4 mixed). There were two clubs that came out on top across the events. Cornhill dominated in the men and East Kilbride took the honours in the women and mixed categories. There was some excellent pulling throughout the day and the Scottish Tug of War Association (STOWA) was delighted with both the numbers of participants and the quality of competition.
The change in the constitution that allows up to two women to pull in men's events was put to the test and helped some of the smaller clubs to compete in weights that they would have otherwise have been unable to. This led to increases in the teams in the Catchweight and 640 Kg. The women certainly appreciated the extra competition and those clubs that chose to use the new rule were certainly competitive.
If this level of turnout can be maintained then the outlook for this season looks to be very promising.
