SCOTTISH NATIONAL TUG OF WAR CHAMPIONSHIPS
STIRLING HIGHLAND GAMES
8 JULY 2007

There was the biggest turnout of clubs at the National Championships for many years with 8 of them in the 640 Kg alone. There were many close battles between the different teams across the four weights contested but Cornhill, from Lower Banff, dominated all of them. The Cornhill club set out to impose itself on the Scottish club scene at the end of last season and the approach has brought great rewards with wins at 600 Kg, 640 Kg, 680 Kg and 720 Kg. These wins showed that the win by Lower Banff Young Farmers at the Royal Highland Show was no fluke and that Cornhill has established itself as the top club in Scotland. Another team from the far north east to show up well was Halkirk from John ‘o’ Groats. They pushed Cornhill all the way in their three weights and offered the only real threat on the day.

Established clubs such as East Kilbride and Kinneff found it tough going and took home some minor medals without seriously threatening either Halkirk or Cornhill. Although the men from Stonehaven took the 560 Kg title when they were the only team to make the weight. There was a welcome return to the Championships for clubs that have been Champions in years gone by , when Kinross and North Fife contested a number of the weights. It was in fact a good day for North Fife who took the silver medal in the 600Kg and lost out on the bronze medal in two others.

Other clubs contributed greatly to the competition and helped to make it more of a spectacle to the large and highly appreciative crowd. Strichen and Turriff were involved in many of the most exciting and tiring matches of the day and their all action style certainly endeared them to the Stirling crowd. The day however belonged to Cornhill and everyone at STOWA wishes them the best when they go on to represent Scotland at the UK and European Championships.
